Speak Ai Onboarding Email Automations

First Onboarding Email

This is is part of my live-learning series! I will be updating this post as I continue through my journey. I apologize for any grammatical errors or incoherent thoughts. This is a practice to help me share things that are valuable without falling apart from the pressure of perfection.

Onboarding is such an important part of successful product experience. Truthfully, we lack that. We’ve made improvements by recently adding sample media files, a guided tour and more. But, it’s still not enough.

What am I now exploring is onboarding email automations. How can we have someone sign up, and in a gentle, valuable way, educate them on the power of our platform. If they’ve signed up, they may have some idea. But, there is so much hidden under the surface level of our technology that if exposed can be immensely beneficial for our users.

Challenges with Onboarding Email Automations

We have different kinds of users. They are using our application for different purposes. How can communicate effectively with users that have different needs, pains, desires, goals, and workflows? We’ve straddled that line for a long time and it is hard. We have to create these more general, all-purpose emails that will never be as tight and resonate the way we want them to. Or, maybe that’s just a sign we don’t have product-market fit or the right customers yet.

To communicate in the personalized way most people want, enjoy, and get value from, we would need to segment users based on what they are trying to accomplish. For example, some users are signing up and transcribing audio and video for research. Others are transcribing to help with content creation. Some users are using our system for journaling and self-analysis. Others are using our interactive media player and embedding it on websites to improve marketing, SEO, accessibility and engagement. It seems impossible to speak to them all in a way. But we have to do it.

Over time, I think we will need to and want to segment. Maybe, when you sign up, it asks you: what are you using Speak for? Then, we can tailor the onboarding email automations based on the options they select. What if they select multiple options? There are so many factors at play here.

Current Onboarding Email Automations

Well, we’ve really only got one. And it’s pretty wack 😂

First Onboarding Email

No resources or links. No really personalization. You can see {{name}} which automatically inserts the user’s name. That’s good I guess but we’re all pretty used to that by now.

There is a lot of science and research put into this.
